Prof. Alian is currently seeking applicants for a competitive Ph.D. fellowship (Fall 2025) in the Department of Earth & Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania. A range of potential projects are possible, centering on soil carbon biogeochemistry, including quantification and characterization of the persistent pools of pyrogenic and geogenic carbon in dark/black soils, examination of potential upper limits to soil carbon stabilization, and the energetics of soil organic matter cycling and persistence. Positions are ideal for candidates who have completed an MSc in soil science, geosciences, environmental chemistry, ecosystem science or related fields, but outstanding BSc graduates in such programs will be considered.
